Understanding The Difference Between Oxford & Poplin Shirts

Chris Ackroyd • 26 Aug 2025, 9:53 a.m.

1. Fabric & Weave

Oxford Shirt

  • Weave: Oxford cloth uses a basket weave — two yarns woven over and under two yarns. This gives it a textured, slightly heavier finish.
  • Yarns: Typically uses thicker yarns, sometimes with a contrasting color in the weft and warp (creating a "marled" effect).
  • Texture: Slightly rougher, more substantial, and has a visible weave structure.
  • Weight: Medium to heavy compared to poplin — more durable.

Poplin Shirt

  • Weave: Poplin uses a plain weave — one warp yarn over, one under. This is a very tight, smooth weave.
  • Yarns: Generally finer, with higher thread counts, giving a crisp but soft hand feel.
  • Texture: Smooth, flat, and almost silky compared to Oxford. The weave is less visible to the eye.
  • Weight: Lightweight, breathable, but still structured.

2. Dynamics & Performance

Oxford

  • Durability: Stronger due to thicker yarns and basket weave. Holds up well to frequent wear and washing.
  • Look: More casual, slightly rugged. Can be worn with or without a tie.
  • Comfort: Breaks in over time; can feel stiff initially. Breathability is moderate.
  • Finish: Matte, less sheen than poplin.

Poplin

  • Durability: Still strong, but the finer weave can be more prone to wrinkling and showing wear.
  • Look: Sleek, smooth, and formal. Often chosen for business shirts and dress shirts.
  • Comfort: Very breathable and soft against the skin.
  • Finish: Crisp and polished, often with a subtle sheen.
